Torsion vs. Extension Garage Door Springs: What's the Difference?

Every garage door has a spring system — a counterbalance mechanism that carries the door’s weight so the opener only has to move it, not lift it. There are two fundamentally different ways that system can be built, and which one your door has affects repair cost, spring lifespan, and how dangerous a failure is.

The two systems at a glance

Torsion springs mount horizontally above the door on a steel shaft, parallel to the top of the door opening. They work by twisting (torquing) around the shaft as the door moves — winding tighter as the door closes, releasing that stored energy as the door opens. The shaft transfers force to cable drums at each end, which wind and unwind the lift cables that run to the bottom corners of the door.

Extension springs mount horizontally along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door, parallel to the ceiling. They work by stretching — extending as the door closes, contracting and pulling the door up as it opens. Each spring attaches to a pulley system that multiplies the force and connects to the lift cable.

How to tell which system you have

Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look at the area above the door:

  • A horizontal spring (or two springs) centered on a steel rod above the door, with cable drums at each end → torsion spring system
  • Long springs running along both side tracks (parallel to the ceiling), one on each side → extension spring system

Most homes built after 1990 with two-car or larger garage doors have torsion springs. Extension springs are more common on older homes, one-car doors, and lighter doors — though they appear in newer construction too.

Torsion springs: advantages

Longer lifespan. Standard residential torsion springs are rated for 10,000 cycles; high-cycle options go to 25,000–50,000. Extension springs are typically rated 8,000–10,000 cycles.

Safer failure mode. When a torsion spring breaks, it stays on the shaft. The door drops, the opener stops, the problem is obvious and contained. The cable system usually prevents the door from free-falling.

Better door control. Torsion systems produce more consistent force across the door’s travel, meaning smoother operation and less wear on rollers and tracks over time.

One spring can cover the full door. A double-car torsion system typically runs either one large spring or two smaller springs on a single shaft — either way, the entire weight is balanced from the center. Extension systems run two independent springs, one per side, which can get out of sync.

Extension springs: disadvantages

Projectile risk on failure. When an extension spring snaps, it’s a stretched cable under high tension suddenly releasing — it can fly across the garage with significant force. This is why safety cables are critical: a steel cable threaded through the center of each extension spring catches it if it breaks.

Safety cables are not always present. Older extension spring systems may have been installed without safety cables — a code-compliance issue in many jurisdictions and a real safety risk. If you have extension springs and no cables running through them, this should be corrected.

Two-sided balance issue. If one spring weakens or breaks, the door goes off-balance. This wears tracks, rollers, and the opener unevenly.

What does the safety cable on an extension spring look like?

It’s a thin steel cable threaded through the coils of the spring and attached at both ends — to the rear track hanger and to the front pulley bracket. You should be able to see it running through the interior of each spring. If you see springs with no cable through them, ask a technician about adding them ($30–$60 per spring, installed).

Can you convert from extension to torsion?

Yes, and it’s a worthwhile upgrade on older doors if the header clearance above the door allows it. Torsion conversion requires:

  • Removing the existing extension spring hardware (springs, pulleys, cables, rear track hangers)
  • Installing a torsion spring tube, end cones, cable drums, and new springs sized for the door weight
  • Re-routing the lift cables

Cost: $250–$500 for the conversion on a standard door, including parts and labor. You end up with a torsion system, longer spring life, and a safer failure mode. If the extension springs are at end of life anyway, conversion is worth discussing with the technician.

Spring sizing: why it matters

Springs are not generic. Torsion springs are specified by wire diameter, inside diameter, and length — all of which determine the torque produced and the cycle rating. Extension springs are specified by length and weight rating.

A spring that’s sized wrong for the door weight will either:

  • Underperform (too light): the door is heavy to lift, the opener strains, springs wear faster because they’re always near full extension or tension
  • Overperform (too heavy): the door flies up, the opener fights to hold it down, cables can unseat

When a technician measures your door for spring replacement, they should either weigh the door or use the panel count and material type to calculate the correct spring. “I’ll just use the same size as what broke” is an acceptable shortcut only if the old spring was correctly sized to begin with.

High-cycle springs: are they worth it?

Standard springs at 10,000 cycles: for a household that cycles the door 4 times per day, that’s roughly 7 years. High-cycle springs at 25,000 cycles: roughly 17 years. At 50,000 cycles: 34 years.

The price difference: a standard torsion spring pair costs $40–$100 in parts. High-cycle springs cost $80–$180. The labor is identical — you’re already paying for the technician to be there. High-cycle springs on a new installation or a spring replacement are almost always worth the incremental cost.

Ask specifically: “What’s the cycle rating on the springs you’re quoting, and what does upgrading to 25,000-cycle cost?”
